(Young family home near Craig, Nebraska, where Mom and Dad first lived after they were married)

Nestled in the trees, the Young family home became my parents’ first home together for two years until they saved enough money to buy their own farm. This was Mother’s dream house; it suited her visual sensitivities and her prim and proper mindset.

For its day and its rural setting, this house was extraordinary. Nothing was spared during its construction. It had exquisitely carved moldings, beautiful stained glass windows, handmade designer wallpaper, original artwork—it even had a Tiffany chandelier. It also had two kitchens: one for summer and one for winter.

After this house left the Young family, it deteriorated so badly it became unrecognizable. But the remaining walls hold warm memories of countless treasured family moments spent together.
