(Abandoned one room school house in rural southeast Nebraska)
While I was driving through Southeast Nebraska, this abandoned schoolhouse seemed to rise out of the freshly turned soil. Memories flooded my mind. This was the turning point, the beginning of a transformation that would draw me back to my past— to know myself intimately.
Considering my disconnection toward recent paintings I had done of unfamiliar subjects, I pondered, “Why not paint what I know intimately instead?” I needed to be completely open about my past. I had learned that denial of feelings about one’s past can negatively affect the present and can hinder growth. As I painted Drawn Back to Light, seeing both dark and Light allowed me to move forward with confidence.
