STALWART

20 ¾ x 13 inches

(Christina’s home)

Even though I never met Andrew Wyeth, he greatly influenced my own art. I painted Stalwart based on memories of Dad’s protective nature; Andrew and Dad had many commonalities. Christina’s farm was one of Andrew’s favorite painting subject matters. Seeing the strong angles of Christina’s weatherworn house brought back memories of our elderly widowed neighbor’s farmhouse. Even though most elderly women moved to town after their husbands died, Mrs. Leudtke wanted to stay in her home and keep her memories alive. Her desire to maintain independence was unshakable. Dad routinely checked in on her to make sure she had enough food and heat during the brutal Nebraska winter months. Although he usually showed a tough exterior, looking out for those in need exposed his warm, protective heart.
