HIDDEN TREASURES

9 x 13 inches

(A creek on our farm)

ISent this painting and the following verse to my family and friends for Christmas in the late 1980s.

Beneath the icy chill of snow-covered ground lie hidden treasures.
Treasures special to a child though only chips of colored glass
seemed as real as precious jewels buried forever in the silt of the creek bed.

When my childhood friend Clare Ann received the card, she immediately called and recounted the hidden meaning of the verse: she and I had collected chips of colored broken glass and carefully placed them in a glass jar. Together we buried the jar in the silt of a creek bed on our farm. Over fifty years later, we both still reminisce about those carefree days.

As young girls, the “imaginary jewels” captivated us.
As lifelong friends, we realize our friendship was the real jewel—the true hidden treasure.
