JUST MARRIED
10 ½ x 18 ½ inches
(Decorated wedding car in cornfield setting)
IIt was love at first sight when Mom met Dad at a dance. He drove a red Studebaker, a nontraditional color for their day. Although she may not want to admit it, I suspect his flashy red car enticed her.
The symbolic red wedding car in this painting is part of a fun, but fading tradition. Celebrating festively, the young male pranksters tied cans on the car, wrapped it with toilet paper, and wrote strange graffiti on it. The odd words, “The fight is on,” were accepted and understood—couples in those days knew that all marriages had challenges. Their mindset was that they would be able to work through all of their issues and stay together.
Progressive spiritual couples now realize that a marriage based on love can be an opportunity for helping raise each partner’s awareness. Unfortunately, marriage can also become a roadblock to growth if one of the partners is reluctant to address his or her personal issues.
Even though fear can become a roadblock, love can illuminate a darkened path.
