UNLOCKED DOORS

21 ¾ x 13 inches

(Sheldon Art Gallery)

Sheldon Art Gallery, designed by famed architect Phillip Johnson, was built on the UNL campus when I was a freshman. While in college, I found it peculiar that the west doors remained locked, especially since Mr. Johnson had designed Sheldon’s traffic pattern on the axis for moving through the building. Although energized by this new structure, as an art student, I felt it halting to be greeted by locked doors when leaving art classes at the Woods Art Building. Perhaps it was the newness of this precious campus jewel that initially kept the doors locked. The good news is that the doors are now unlocked on both the west and east sides, transforming the interior design of this great building to its original sense of welcome.

Unlocked doors symbolize the energy of openness. They encourage Light to flood our interior.
