HERE COMES THE BRIDE

18 x 14 inches

(c. 1930—Dad’s cousins in front of Young family home)

Do you remember playing dress-up as a child? These Young children were playfully and creatively acting out a marriage ceremony that they had most likely seen. In those days of rural living, marriage was based on a sense of physical survival and support, as much as love and commitment. The mutual bond was unspoken, but highly revered.

Despite the forces of the wind, these children look just as committed to the ritual of the wedding as their ancestors. The meaning within the sacrament may have been difficult for the children to grasp, but their steadfastness to stand together is clear. Commitment to one another was natural—the sturdy combination allowed two to become more.
